Homeless doesn’t mean joyless, a jump of joy at Sunrise Park with Paul A. Joenke

Paul A. Joenke photographed by Eyoalha Baker for Jump for Joy Photo Project and Palm Springs Cultural center Artist Residency

We had some time between jumping sessions so my assistant Joe and I decided to get a coffee and sit in the park to pass the time. As we arrived and were about to sit down we met Paul. We started chatting and he told us a bit about his life and his living situation being homeless. I then shared with him about the Jump for Joy Photo Project, and before I was even half way through explaining he had already volunteered to jump.

He was concerned that he might not be able to jump very high, which is a common concern of nearly every person who is about to do a jump with me for the first time. It’s always a source of pleasure for me to see the expression on peoples faces when they see their photo and their limited belief about themselves is changed to amaziement. I like to imagine that this moment can be translated into other areas of people’s lives as well.

I showed Paul his jump he and was happily surprised by his jumping abilities. This was such a fun interaction. Good feelings all around.

Thank you Paul for your friendliness and for sharing your joy with us!
