I met Alexandre while working on my first Jump for Joy Photo Mural, and he was the first to volunteer when I began my second mural in the down town East Side of Vancouver. Sharing joy has a powerful impact the ripples out and touches others. Share your joy, it just may change someones life for the better.

Alexandre Légère …

Q: What inspires you to jump for joy?
A:
Life changing. Jump for a better world.

Q: Inspiration in life?
A:
Others in action. Life experiences. Nature.

Q: Greatest passion?
A:
Love. Liberty to be free. Free to create.

Q: Philosophy?
A:
You are alive, always have hope. Hope to change. Hope to love. Hope to be better person in life.

Q: Anything in the world?
A:
The world needs love. We need to take care of the world. It’s a garden that needs love to flourish.

Q. Working on?
A:
I’m providing home hair services to my clients. I volunteer by doing hair for the homeless in my community.

Mini bio:

I will share a piece of my story. We were two friends. We were living in the darkness of addiction and lost our way. Enough is enough. With Gods’ love, I found the courage, determination, passion and love to fight against myself. I was able to get out of the darkness.

I present myself. Alexandre Légère. French Acadian. Artist. I was orphaned from a very tender age of 5 years old. I want to share my story because I won this struggle. With Gods’ love, I found a family every where I go. The world is my family.

Recently, I was walking down an alley where my friend Robert used to live. Singing to him. Love. Truth. Courage. Faith to never give up. My Biggest wish is to see him happy and in peace. Eyoalha was doing her art at the end of the alley while I was singing to my friend who lost his life. With Gods’ Love, she is now my friend. This is Gods’ handiwork.

Now I take the time to see, feel, listen and smell art. That’s the reason I jump. I jump for joy. I jump for peace. I jump without fear. I jump for love. Thanks to all my friends who never give up and who believed in me. Special thank to my dear friend, Robert.

“You have to go wholeheartedly into anything in order to achieve anything worth having.” – Frank Lloyd Wright

I’m excited to share that I will be one of the speakers at TedXEastVan on April 23rd, 2016!

“Dear Eyoalha –

Congratulations! TEDxEastVan would like to extend a formal invitation to you to speak at the event on April 23rd, 2016. We think that you have an idea worth spreading and would love for you to share it live on stage….” – TedXEastVan

It’s been an amazing learning experience, on many so many levels, creating and building the Jump for Joy photo project over that past few years. It all started out as a simple idea: To feel and share joy around the world with photos of people jumping for joy.

This simple intention has grown and morphed in ways I hadn’t even imagined when I set out on this journey. Creating images with people that touch others on an emotional level, creating massive mural projects that brought people from all walks of life together; all with the intention to uplift ourselves and others through the energy of joy, has been the most gratifying and heart opening experience of my life (so far).

In many ways I feel like I’m just at the beginning, at the tip of the ice burg and Im only now, after several years of jumping photos, starting to tap into the potential of what I can achieve with this project.

Many of you have been following along from the start and I appreciate your continued support. I’m honoured that I have the opportunity to share my experiences on the TedXEastVan stage and hope those of you who can, will join us to hear our ideas..

Have an amazing day!

Much love, Eyoälha

Jump for Joy founder fights negatives in life with joyful photos. An interview by James Phu

…. Read Entire Article HERE ….

Excerpt from interview:

James Phu: The Jump for Joy project that you started is one of the most beautiful and unique initiatives I have seen in a while. What is the background story behind the Jump for Joy Project?

Eyoälha Baker: We know that images are used as powerful tools of persuasion in business and politics, and I noticed that news and media tend to showcase mainly negative, fear-based images. It got me thinking about how this affects us as a society and how we in turn interact with each other. How does it make us feel as a collective, to see images that depict sad, terrorizing news on a daily basis? In general, it breads fear and distrust. My idea with the Jump for Joy Photo Project is that if societies as whole can be influenced to shut off, and fear each other by negative images, they can also be influenced to open up and be kinder by positive images. I look at it as the group think concept, where people feed off each other’s energy in a group situation, such as a riot, where people who may not normally be destructive get caught up in the situation. The same can be true with an overwhelming sense of joy. If there are mass feelings of joy being felt, people tend to be more open, more helpful, hopeful and want to help each other. So I began taking uplifting, positive images of people jumping for joy, and sharing them around the world. The intention is to help shift some of the negative energy being fed to us….

Happy love day to all the romantics in the world – Happy Valentines day!

I love that there is a day of the year designated to celebrating romantic love. Not for the consumerism or false expectations built up around romantic love but because I love any opportunity to celebrate love. … romance is really just thoughtful, kind gestures and creative ways of expressing the beauty of your love to someone who holds your heart. Happy love day to all the romantic lovers out there.

Another one of my selfie jumps – just me and my camera timer🙂 I took this one a while ago while visiting Alert Bay BC.

I’ve been feeling incredibly excited about the new 18,000 sq ft Jump for Joy Mural Im creating. This project is a massive undertaking and has many, many challenges… one of the first ones being raising the funds to create it. Which is why I will be launching another Kickstarter campaign.

If all goes well, the video should be ready to go by the end of next week and I will launch the Kickstarter campaign. If you feel moved by the work I do and would like to be a part of an amazing project, I would be grateful for any contributions you are able to make when the campaign launches.. even if all you can offer is sharing and talking about the project.. it all helps🙂

I know it will be a LOT of work. I also know it will have a beautiful, uplifting effect on everyone involved and who views the final project and there is no better reward than that🙂

Have a wonderful day!

Photos and mural by Eyoälha Baker http://www.jumpforjoyphotoproject.com

This is a little section of the first Jumping mural I made last summer, the new Jump for Joy Photo mural I will create this year will be very similar only on a much larger wall and in a more exposed location – The corner of Abbot and West Pender Street (DTES) Vancouver BC Canada.

I have a lot to do before even beginning the mural, most importantly – raising the funds to make it happen and taking at least 100-200 more jump for joy photos over the next few months – thats a lot of jumping photos!

I have put together a Kickstarter campaign and as soon as Im able to get an intro video produced, I will publish it and begin fundraising. I would very much appreciate your help in spreading the word once the campaign starts.. and if you are able to donate to the project and help spread the joy – that would be even more amazing🙂

I will keep you posted as things progress.

Have a wonderful day!

A new #Vancouver @JumpforJoyPhoto #Mural is in the works! Happy to announce partnership w @FreeOfViolence!!

It’s official! I’m making a new – even bigger – Vancouver jump for joy photo mural🙂

Two weeks ago my Jump for Joy mural was removed. A couple of days later, I wandered around looking for potential walls to make a new mural and… I came across this wall and knew this was the one.

IMG_7025

I immediately went into the print shop in the building and asked who owned the building. I was told it belongs to BC Housing. I looked them up and found they were only a few blocks aways so went straight to their office, they said I would need to speak to Atira Women’s Housing. Atira is a community-based organization that supports all women and children who are experiencing the impact of violence committed against them.

I looked up Atira’s location and went to the leasing office in Coal Harbour.. they told me the number to call, which I did, and had the most wonderful response. 1 or 2 emails and we scheduled to meet today..

Now, I am proud to announce that I am partnering with the Atira Women’s Resource Society and making a massive mural on the corner of Abbott And Pender St. in the most amazing location situated between Downtown Vancouver, Chinatown and Gastown aka DTES🙂

Let the fundraising extravaganza and jumping photo blitz begin!

I’ve already started preparations for a Kickstarter Campaign to raise the funds as I would love to get started on the mural asap .. at the same time, I will need to do at least 4 shoots a day over the next couple of months to have enough photos to for the mural.

My last mural was 32 ft high by 114 ft wide, this wall is the same width, but has 3 more stories at 65 ft high by 114 ft wide! So thats a lot of wall to cover with jumping joy and a lot of funds to raise to make it happen.

An email from Joe Carlson about the #Vancouver #JumpforJoyPhoto #Mural @eyoalha

I received this touching email yesterday from a fellow named Joe Carlson. I went by to see what had been done…

They did a great job of pasting back pieces that had started to peel off due to water damage…. I am very appreciative of whoever took the time to voluntarily repair the water damaged areas pealing off the wall.

Thank you Amalia and whoever your friends are that did the work…

Joe gave me permission to share his lovely email with you, please take a moment to look through his wonderful photographs here: joecarlsonthroughthelens.com

——________——–______——-_______——–______——–_______——-_____–

Hello Eyoalha;

My name is Joe Carlson, at the end of January, I was downtown and found your amazing mural. I ended up at the mural twice in 3 days.I hung around and got some cool shots of your mural, people in the lane and the 2 gentlemen sprucing up your mural.

I posted my photos on Facebook, people were surprised at where the mural was and thought it was a great idea and very cool…

I just thought you would like to know that your work was appreciated.

I did not attach the photos that I took , I thought it would be easier for you to see them at my website: joecarlsonthroughthelens.com

This is what I said on Facebook:

“I was downtown on January 26th to do some street photography and found this mural in a lane off of Main and Pender. I stayed for a while and took some photos of the mural and some people. I saw that it was called the Jump for Joy photo project. I noticed that some of the mural was peeling away from the wall of the building. (this comment will make sense in a moment) I went on line to find out what the project was, this is what it says:

“Completed August 4, 2014: 32 ft high by 114 ft wide Jump for Joy Photo Mural in the lane way of 161 East Pender Street, Vancouver BC Canada. The mural is a compilation of photos of almost 200 people jumping for joy in different parts of Vancouver. The photos have been enlarged to 4×4 ft. and printed on 11×17 sheets cut and pasted together, then pasted to the wall.”

On January 28th I was back downtown and was walking by the mural and noticed a workman on a ladder fixing the mural. I spoke to the gentleman holding the ladder and found he was a friend of the person who owned the building. They were there volunteering to do some repairs to the mural. I stayed for a while talking and taking some photos. They were still working when I left. I just thought it was a cool little story that evolved by visiting the same place twice over 3 days. It’s amazing who you meet when wandering and how creative and talented people are….”

Take care, Joe

Thank you joe!🙂

Much has changed in my life since my first Jump for Joy shoot with Eyoälha. My then almost-3-year-old is now an almost-4-year-old (and, starting next week, a bona fide preschooler, egad). We’ve moved into a bigger space. I’m now penning a film & TV industry column for WE: The Westender.

And in April, I lost a baby.

I’ve been pretty open about my miscarriage (I even wrote an article about it for the Westender less than a month after it happened; (http://www.wevancouver.com/lifestyle/health-beauty/unpregnant-a-miscarriage-story-1.1026058), and without the shackles of shame that come from keeping silent, I think I’ve moved – and am moving – through my grief as well as can be expected.

Not that the miscarriage was on my mind when I arrived at Kits Beach last week for my second shoot with Eyoälha. My thoughts were more about my daughter (would she jump this time around? Would she tire easily and play with rocks instead? The answers, incidentally, would be yes and yes), and about my previous experience jumping with Eyoälha.

That shoot – which occurred in October 2013 – had been wildly successful. I’d surprised myself with my power, and the height and cool shapes I’d been able to achieve thanks to Eyoälha’s tips.

And so we began to shoot that sunny August afternoon, and like that previous shoot, I went for maximum velocity, aiming for height and cool arm shapes.

The result? I wrenched my shoulder and nearly rolled my ankle. I wasn’t in control like I had been last autumn.

I was in danger of getting derailed by frustration. I knew it. Tears of shame gathered behind my eyes and threatened to roll down my cheeks.

“Don’t go for power,” Eyoälha offered gently from where she lay on the sand, the camera obscuring her face. “Try soft. Go for soft. Just be free.”

As I prepared to jump again, my mind took me back to April, and the loss of my pregnancy – and to the ferocious determination I’d put on like armour to move on from the pain, to let it go – and I suddenly realized that what had eluded me was peace.

To that point, my grief had been pushing me forward, as if I’d been running away from it instead of trying to integrate it into my life – and so I jumped again, soft and light as if carried on the breeze, and I thought of the life that had so briefly lived within me, and the connection we’d always have, and when my feet touched the beach again, that feeling was still there.

You can see it in Eyoälha’s photo. You can see it happen: that moment of acceptance and release.

For me, that jump was not as much about joy as it was about leaping for peace.

It’s rather incredible what pools of strength and healing you can find hiding in yourself. You just have to take that first leap.

Thank you, Eyoälha! xo

A few photos from the Vancouver Jump for Joy photo mural opening event <3

An incredible day celebrating the completion of the mural and sharing joy with participants, passers by and the local community in Chinatown. So proud of my nephew Sekoya who took these photos, I handed him my camera and after a very brief explanation how to use it… he captured these incredible photos🙂 I cant wait to create more jumping joy photos to complete my book and make more murals!

Vancouver Jump for Joy Mural Opening today! Hooray! :)

Today we celebrate and be thankful for joy, creativity, art, uplifting each other, community, fun and.. well, all the good feeling vibes and positive energy that we feel when we are inspired to jump for joy.

Today is the Vancouver Jump for Joy Mural official opening. It is my honour to invite people to share and celebrate the experience of creating this joy-filled public art work.

The mural will be on the wall for an entire year. Today we have permission from the city to hold off car traffic. We’ve moved garbage bins, and are tidying up so we can linger, mingle, jump around and dance in the lane way.

The event is being held between 1:30-4:30 and is located in the lane beside 161 East Pender Street.

Get your jumping shoes on, stop by to do a jump photo in front of the mural! Tweet it to me: @jumpforjoyphoto #jumpforjoyphoto
