Playing with light and shadows and jumping for joy with Jessica Macias

Jessica Macias photographed by Eyoalha Baker for Jump for Joy Photo Project and Palm Springs Cultural Center Artist Residency

What a fun morning this was! I got to spend time and do jumping photos with an incredible group of fierce, creative women with the beautiful architecture of the Rancho Mirage Public Library as the backdrop. Jessica and the rest of the women had already done some great jumps in front of the Library, when my amazing assistant Thomas noticed these cool shadows. I asked who might like to play around and experiment more with jumping in the shadows and Jessica jumpined in without hesitation. I love how the photo turned out!

Get to know more about Jessica:
Q: What inspires you to jump for joy?
Seeing how much joy is good for the world and brings people closer together in a shared moment inspires me to jump for joy.

Q: How was your experience doing the jumping photos?
Doing the photos was very fun, it was a great experience to share with my fellow Wyld Womxn and learn about this project. Before I was just really curious about how it would all go, after jumping all morning, it made you so light-hearted and all the fun it was like a big release of other built-up tensions.

Q: How do you describe the feeling of joy?
Joy to me is a warm feeling. A carefree just loving feeling, a great laugh that just makes you feel good all around. I’m grateful for all the moments that give me joy, they uplift your bad days and create memories. It puts a shine through the gloom.

Q: What is your greatest passion in life? Why?
Visual art is my greatest passion. I’ve painted and drawn since I was a little kid. I want to paint around the world and be able to make people feel something in that moment thru art.

Q: How do you feel about being part of a community project that promotes joy?
I liked it very much. Anything that promotes a positive vibe in my valley and brings people together as a community I’m always down for.

Q: If you could do anything in the world, what would it be?
See the whole world, live in every country and know all different cultures, people, and places. Paint along the way.

Q: What are you working on or creating?
Right now I’m working on a series of oil paintings. Almost like a surreal diary of events and people in my life.

Q: Mini bio or something special you want to share.
I’m a 25-year-old half Mexican American. Born and raised in the Coachella Valley. I’m an artist and am in a feminist art collective called Wyld Womxn.
